SIGNIFICANCE OF THE KHADAR
Khaddar generally describes a piece of silk cloth with varying size. It usually is of a meter length, sometimes longer and is presented with gifts during occasions or as an offering to lamas (saints). A white piece of cloth has significantly some unique way of folding according to the purpose it serves. When it is folded into several curls using our finger and released from the right hand below a stretched left hand, the offer is for the dead and if done above the hand, it is for the living.
This silk cloth is being widely used by every Bhutanese during marriages, on visiting temples, during inaugurations, house warming, rituals, offerings to the death, on welcoming guests or dignitaries and more. This way of presenting a scarf like cloth, usually hung over the neck, depicts a rare and unique Bhutanese tradition.
