Tashigang

is situated on the banks of the Gamri Chu in the far east of the country. This is the biggest and the most important district of Bhutan and is 91 kilometers from Mongar and 180 kilometers from Samdrup Jongkhar. Historically, Tashigang enjoyed its importance as the main center of business with Tibet. Tashigang is well connected with the Indian state Assam. Guwahati is only 110 kilometers from Tashigang.

Places of Interest

Tashigang Dzong : This Dzong was built in 1667 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa on a hill slope besides river Manas. The Dzong was from where the entire eastern region was governed from the late 17th century until unification of the country at the beginning of the 20th Century. It still plays an important role in administration of the region. This is also the house of the local monk body.

Gom Kora: According to the Bhutanese Mythology Guru Rinpoche meditated here to restrain a demon leaving in huge black rock. The temple is constructed where the Guru meditated. The Gom Kora temple is set up on a small plateau overlooking the river and is surrounded by banana trees and rice fields.
